| In need of TLC: Arlington Senior Center |
The fund would be restricted by law to preservation purposes—but that covers a lot of ground.
A community-preservation fund could also be used for improvements to parks and playgrounds and for affordable housing.
The following are examples to show what's possible. It would be up to Town Meeting to decide what the priorities are.
Historic preservation includes more that just restoring the Cyrus Dallin statue in the Town Garden. It also includes restoration and repairs to Arlington High, the Senior Center, and Town Hall, which are historic buildings. Click for more historic-preservation examples.
Recreational opportunities include improvements to the Minuteman Path, a swimming pool, and a youth center. Click for more recreation examples.
Housing supports affordable-housing projects such as the Housing Corporation of Arlington's recently completed Capital Square project in East Arlington. Click for more affordable-housing examples.
Open-space protection could acquire properties such as land abutting Poet's Corner, or otherwise protect wetlands from development. Click for more open-space examples.
These projects are chronically postponed. Only a dedicated fund will get these projects done and pass Arlington's legacy along to the next generation.
